Student Application

 

TMA has a number of loan funds available to medical students within the state of Texas.

 

HOW TO APPLY

  • Funds are limited to specific medical schools annually.*
  • Students apply online by completing/e-signing the application, promissory note, self-certification form, and W9-S form.
  • Upload PDF of the recommendation from the Financial Aid Office or verification of enrollment from the Registrar (MUST be on school letterhead and contain expected graduation date).
  • Upload a copy of your current drivers license or picture ID.
  • After review of all submitted application materials, TMA will email applicants with instructions regarding the required virtual or telephone meeting with a TMA Interviewing Trustee. During this meeting, the terms of loans and the importance of becoming involved in organized medicine is discussed.
  • Upon approval, the loan will be provided directly to the student via direct deposit within approximately two (2) weeks.

* Baylor College of Medicine, TTUHSC Paul L Foster School of Medicine, University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, UTHSC San Antonio-Long Medical School, and UTMB Galveston require medical students to contact their Financial Aid Officers prior to applying online with TMA.  


Dr. S. E. Thompson Scholarship Loan Fund

  • Available only to students attending The University of Texas System medical schools: The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, The University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, The University of Texas Dell Medical School, and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.
  • Students may borrow up to $6,000 per year; lifetime maximum $6,000.
  • No residency requirement.
  • Borrowers are limited to a combined fund total of $12,000.
 

Dr. May Owen Irrevocable Trust Loan Fund

  • Available to students attending the following Texas medical schools: Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M College of Medicine, Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Texas Christian University/University of North Texas HSC School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Texas Tech University Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, University of Houston College of Medicine, University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, and University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth.
  • Student may borrow up to $6,000 per year; lifetime maximum $6,000.
  • No residency requirement.
  • Borrowers are limited to a combined fund total of $12,000.
 

TMA Alliance Medical Student Loan Fund

  • Available to students attending select medical school in Texas. 
  • Students may borrow up to $6,000 per year; lifetime maximum $6,000.
  • Students must be Texas residents.
  • These funds are limited. Please contact TMA for availability of these loans.
  • Borrowers are limited to a combined fund total of $12,000.
 

TMA Special Funds Foundation Medical Student Loan Fund

  • Available to students attending select medical school in Texas.
  • Students may borrow up to $6,000 per year; lifetime maximum $6,000.
  • Students must be Texas residents.
  • These funds are limited. Please contact TMA for availability of these funds.
  • Borrowers are limited to a combined fund total of $12,000.
 

TMA Special Funds Foundation Durham Student Loan Fund

  • Available to students attending select medical school in Texas.
  • Students may borrow up to $6,000 per year; lifetime maximum $6,000.
  • Students must be Texas residents.
  • These funds are limited. Please contact TMA for availability of these loans.
  • Borrowers are limited to a combined fund total of $12,000.
 

REPAYMENT TERMS

  • Interest is due one year after the loan is disbursed and then annually until monthly repayment begins.
  • Principal repayment begins four years after graduation from medical school.
  • Equal monthly payments will be made for 48 months.
  • Loans may be repaid in full at any time without pre-payment penalty.
  • The note will become due immediately if the student should discontinue the study of medicine.
